Jay’s traumatic memory of his grandfather’s death haunts him on the biggest stage of his life - the national spelling bee competition.

That’s a wrap on "Papa’s Corner"! Production concluded in December, and we’re now entering the post-production phase. We deeply appreciate your ongoing support for this project and would like to highlight that (tax-free!) donations for post can still be made.

Your contribution will go towards compensating our post-production team, including an original score by a Filipino-American independent musician, as well as marketing and festival submission fees (these rack up, and we’re planning to submit to a lot!).

We are excited for Papa’s Corner to find its home in the festival circuit, and eventually be seen by a wider audience, so every contribution counts to get us towards this goal.

Jay Domingo, a 16-year old speller, gets triggered by a word that the spelling bee judges throw at him. This word forces Jay to confront an internal demon while all eyes are on him. Pressure is applied on all angles for Jay as he takes on the challenge. We learn that this word is not just any word, but a word that resurrects a tragic memory—the day he lost his grandfather, his Papa.

Jay goes through an internal battle with his trauma on stage in real time; on top of that, he’s forced to make his final attempt at spelling the proposed word. As it’s about to get worse, Papa’s spirit uplifts him in these final moments. Jay recalls a sincere conversation he had with his Papa the night before the heart attack. This memory serves as Jay’s saving grace.

Papa’s spirit was alive after all.

"Papa’s Corner" illustrates a life lesson: that whether it being good or bad, every single experience that we have endured through our lifetime holds purpose. These trials and tribulations shape us individually, of who we are, and where we come from. The film is a testament of how strong simple human values such as love and family connection could be. It’s not a romantic love story, but a love story that celebrates perseverance and the bond Papa had with his grandkids.

We are raising $40,000 to begin production. Our team has the passion, tools, and professional experience to make this film successful—now we need the funds to execute that vision.

Is my donation tax deductible?

Depends on a few factors like if you received a reward in exchange for the donation and the value of your donation above that rewards cost, etc. You may contact the nonprofit you donated to directly to receive information on whether or not your donation is tax deductible. Nonetheless, the emailed receipts you will receive for your donation is the documentation you need to make it tax deductible.

Yes, the security and confidentiality of your information is our highest priority. How do I know that my donation was made successfully?

You will receive an emailed receipt immediately after your donation is submitted and your credit card is processed. Your donation will also show up on your bank or card statement within 1-3 business days.

Do I get a receipt?

Yes, a receipt is sent to your email inbox once your donation is processed. Please be sure to keep a copy of your receipt for tax purposes. If you select a recurring donation, you will be sent an individual receipt each period when your donation is processed.
